EBI Declines, But Stays Positive

While the heads of U.S. engineering remain positive about business prospects, “their confidence is fraying at the edges,” according to a press release from the American Council of Engineering Companies announcing the council’s Engineering Business Index (EBI).

The EBI charts the health of the engineering industry through member responses to a series of questions about company performance and market trends, consolidated into a single number. Any number over 50 indicates expansion.

The fourth quarter EBI is 66.5 — a strong number, but down from 68.8 and 68.9 in the previous quarters. Survey respondents were high on the current engineering market, but somewhat less sure about where the market will be in a year (although that decline was from Q3’s 74.3 score to a “still impressive” 72.2.
