A multi-year comprehensive energy efficiency retrofit project was released by the military for a large military base in the South. Part of this large scale project was upgrading the HVAC systems for several facilities. One example from this base wide project was an office building that received new sensors and controls for an existing HVAC system. As project manager and designer, the design/build firm was allocated the Section 179D deduction by the government owner. In this example, the HVAC retrofit resulted in a 21.30% power and energy savings. As a result, the design/build firm was eligible for a $0.60/SF Section 179D deduction or $49,827.60.
