Construction employment totaled 6,388,000 in August, the most since February 2009, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

But while the sector had been adding nearly 30,000 jobs a month at the beginning of the year, it’s added an average of 6,800 each of the past six months, and only 3,000 in August — adding weight to association warnings of a labor shortage.

“The recent slowdown in construction hiring appears to reflect difficulty in finding qualified employees rather than lack of projects needing workers,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “The pool of qualified construction workers will need to expand if firms are going to be able to keep pace with rising construction demand.”
