Construction Unemployment Rate Drops to 6.2%

Expanding demand and the prospect of new federal highway legislation have spurred construction firms to add 46,000 workers in November — the biggest monthly gain in employment for the sector since January 2014, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America.

In November, the construction industry employed 6,490,000, the most since January 2009, and increased 4.2 percent over a year ago. The new jobs drop the industry’s unemployment rate to 6.2 percent.

“Construction firms appear to be having an easier time finding workers to hire after months of struggling with worker shortages,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist.
