It’s crunch time for Congress and the White House on what House Speaker Paul Ryan has called “once-in-a-generation tax reform.” Tax rates, deductions, and policies set in stone are up for negotiation for the first time in decades.

Congress gave itself an extension Friday, passing a five-day continuing resolution that will keep the government open until Dec. 16, when it hopes to pass a package that bundles the year-end spending bill with a host of other provisions.

Big package under the tree?

The Coalition to Extend and Improve the 179D Tax Deduction for Energy-Efficient Buildings has prepared a letter urging that Congress pass a multi-year extension of the Section 179D tax deduction, with changes that will make the standards for qualifying “more stringent” and that will allow tribal governments and non-profits to allocate the deduction to designers.

Just a few years ago, many people thought that comprehensive tax reform would be accomplished with a bipartisan deal — a “Kumbaya” moment when President Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner would join hands to remake the US tax code.

Concord joins more than 2,000 other companies to sign a letter to members of Congress, urging them to pass legislation extending or making permanent the set of tax incentives known as “tax extenders.”

On August 5, 2015 Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hatch introduced S. 1946, the 2-year extenders package that was reported out of the Senate Finance Committee on July 21st. The legislative text for the extenders bill can be found here.

The Senate and House committees that write tax laws seem to be ready to take up the string of so-called tax extenders — the tax incentives that include Section 179D — that have yet to be renewed for 2015.
